Activision announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold more than 6.5 million units in its first 24 hours of availability. Activision also announced that CoD: MW3 had the biggest launch ever (in terms of sales) "across all forms of entertainment," with day-one revenue generating more than $400 and five-day worldwide salls making $775 million.
Activision and Microsoft said the Xbox 360 version of the game saw 3.3 million players log more than 7 million multiplayer hours in the game's first day, beating Block Ops 2.6 million players and 5.9 million multiplayer hours.
"There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row," Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said. "Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."
